Basic saloon construction “just to give you an idea”

 

 

First select a car, and find what class it falls into (see saloon classes)

  1. Cars must retain its original shape / silhouette.
  2. Strip all flammable materials out of the car
  3. Doors must be welded shut with three 1” welds up each upright and 1”weld at the bottom of each door. Front doors may be stripped down to the skin.
  4. All glass must be removed, including mirrors
  5. Steel weld mesh 1”x1” x 12 gauge must cover the windscreen aperture.
  6. Air bags / steering locks must be removed
  7. A safety harness to BSI standard must be fitted (3 point minimum)
  8. A racing seat must be used (excluding kart seat)
  9. Head restraint must be fitted above the seat, inline with the back of the crash helmet.
  10. Fire Extinguishers minimum “1kg” foam or dry power must be within the drivers reach when harnessed.
  11. Prefix and numbers on the doors must be 9” high, numbers on the roof fin must be 6” high
  12. All wiring may be removed
  13. An isolation switch must be fitted to the off side scuttle.
  14. A brake light must be fitted to the rear of the car
  15. fuel tank must be taken out
  16. A single non-spill tank must be fitted (3 gallon max)
  17. All four wheels must lock-up on grass (abs must be removed)
  18. Tyres on the drive wheels must be remoulded and supplied by a NASA approved supplier
  19. Catalytic converters must be removed
  20. all cars must be silenced to with in 105Db(A)
  21. A NASA approved roll cage must be fitted ( can be self built)

Autograss has 7 saloon classes


These are the saloon classes in the very basic form.

 

Class 1 

 Standard Production Front Wheel Drive Saloons of specified type and manufacturer. The specified cars for 2006 are the 998cc Leyland/Austin rover/ rover mini, 954cc Citron AX 1987 - 1997 and 899cc Fiat Cinquecento 1993 - 1998. No tuning modifications are allowed, the only modifications permitted are those needed to comply with regulations that refer to safety.

Class 2

Restricted Modification, Front & Rear Wheel Drive Vehicles up to 1300cc. Limited engine and suspension modifications are allowed but all engines must breathe through a 32mm inlet restrictor plate. Front wheel drive vehicles are also subject to a minimum wheelbase restriction of 2286mm(90ins). Popular cars are front wheel drive Vauxhall Nova, Nissan Micra, Ford fiesta and VW polo with the occasional rear wheel drive Ford Escort.

Class 3

Front engine Rear Wheel Drive Saloons over 1421cc. Any car engine is permitted in any style of body shell. Front whell drive shells converted to rear wheel drive are also subject to a minimum wheelbase restriction or 2400mm (94.5ins). Popular cars in this class are the rear wheel drive toyota starlet and the front wheel drive converted to rear wheel drive such as Mk 3, 4 & 5 Escorts, fiestas and peugoet 205.

Class 4

 Modified Front or rear wheel drive vehicles up to 1130cc. The main restriction in this class is that the manufacturers original engine and gearbox must be used. Unlimited internal modifications to the engine and gearbox are allowed. The most popular cars in the class are still ultra light minis and the hillman imp, which are now been challenged by more modern 1100cc vehicles such as the Citron AX and the Nissan Micra.

Class 5

Modified front or rear wheel drive vehicles over 1131cc up to 1420cc. Any engine may be used in any position driving the front or rear wheels. Lightweight Minis and novas are being challenged by a variety of vechiles converted to mid engined rear wheel drive, such as Fiat Seicento/Cinquecento and the Nissan Micra.

Class 6

 Modified front wheel drive vehicles over 1421cc. Almost anything goes saloon class for front wheel drive cars, popular Vehicles competing in this class are the Vauxhall Nova/Corsa, Peugoet 106/205 Citron AX/Saxo Ford Ka and the minis.

Class 7

Modified rea wheel drive vehicles over 1421cc. Almost anything goes saloon class for rear wheel drive cars . Most saloons are of a mid engine configuration, with many either super or turbo charged or a popular twin motorbike engined set up. Donor shells for this class are of a small hatchback design such as the Renault Clio, Fiat Seicento / Cinq / Punto Metro and Peugeot 205.

stock hatch is made up of class 5 and class 6 cars that have limited modifications with maximum of 8 valves and 1600cc.
